Conclusion - Asus ExpertBook B5 is unbalanced
The latest ExpertBook B5 from Asus is a powerful office computer with a good 16-inch IPS display that is very well suited for productive tasks. There are modern connections and communication standards including Thunderbolt 4, and the often quiet fan and comfortable keyboard are also impressive. The fact that our test device with single-channel RAM cannot utilize the full graphics performance of the iGPU is not overly important for an office laptop, especially as the RAM can easily be expanded with a second module if required. However, the battery life is not particularly good compared to the competition.
The business computer also impresses in terms of security features, as the device can also be configured with a SmartCard reader in addition to the usual features such as a fingerprint scanner or TPM module.
On the other hand, the device also has some weak points, such as the stability of the base unit or the poor fit of the ClickPad on our test device, which leads to constant rattling noises. This does not match the price of around 1,300 Euros (~$1526) and we are already curious to see how the ExpertBook P5 will fare against the current business competition. With the new Lenovo ThinkPad E16, we already have a comparison device in the test.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
The Asus ExpertBook B5 is currently available on Amazon for just under 1,300 Euros (~$1526).
With the ExpertBook B5 series, Asus offers office laptops with the latest components. Our test device is the ExpertBook B5 B5605, i.e. the 16-inch version with a high-resolution 144 Hz display and a current Arrow Lake processor for 1,300 Euros (~$1526).
Specifications
Housing & equipment
The ExpertBook B5 uses a metal casing and the design with the dark grey color looks very high-quality, but the dark surfaces are also very susceptible to dirt. The base unit is very resistant to pressure, but it can be twisted a little, which also leads to slight creaking noises. The lid itself performs well and we were unable to cause any image errors even with selective pressure. The maximum opening angle is 180 degrees, but the hinges are too loose and there is very noticeable rocking. Two RAM slots are available and the M.2 2280 SSD, WLAN module and battery are all replaceable if necessary.
In terms of equipment, the ExpertBook B5 offers a modern Wi-Fi 7 module as well as all important connections including Thunderbolt 4 and a network connection. The microSD reader is very slow and the 1080p webcam (including mechanical shutter and IR module for face recognition) does not take particularly good pictures. It is not a Copilot+ laptop, but the studio effects for the webcam and live subtitles are supported. The ExpertBook is also available with an optional SmartCard reader.

Sustainability
The ExpertBook B5 is one of the first devices to support the Digital Product Passport (DPP), which allows you to call up extensive information on the entire material cycle (including details of the CO2 footprint and recycled materials). However, the corresponding QR code was missing on our press sample, which is why we cannot provide the data here. The packaging consists of a high proportion of recycled materials and can also be fully recycled.
Input devices - Splash-proof keyboard
As a 16-inch model, the ExpertBook B5 offers a keyboard with a number pad. The key travel is sufficient and the overall typing experience is very comfortable thanks to the precise keystrokes. However, the larger keys (e.g. Enter, space bar) are quite loud. In addition to the white backlighting, the keyboard is also splash-proof. A fingerprint scanner is integrated in the power button at the top right.
The ClickPad is very large at 15 x 10 cm and offers good gliding properties. However, it is shifted slightly to the left and, in the case of the test device, is not perfectly integrated into the base unit and there is some play, especially in the lower area. Even if you just tap the pad here, it rattles slightly. It also affects the mechanical clicks and doesn't look particularly high-quality overall. We cannot say at this point whether this is a general or isolated problem. We will try to check this with a second test device.
Display - IPS with 144 Hz
Our test configuration is equipped with the high-resolution and matte IPS panel (2,560 x 1,600 pixels), which offers decent picture quality. The content is sharp, colors are sufficiently vivid thanks to full sRGB coverage and movements benefit from the increased frequency (144 Hz). In addition, even bright surfaces do not appear grainy and there are only slight halos. There is no PWM flickering and the response times are inconspicuous.
The maximum brightness is ~410 cd/m² on average and, together with the low black level, this results in a very good contrast ratio. Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software shows a visible blue cast and clear color deviations for the factory profile. With our calibration (the corresponding profile is linked in the box on the right), the maximum brightness is slightly reduced, but we can significantly improve the display. Only 100% blue still deviates significantly from the target value, which is why the panel is not the best choice for image editing. However, the screen is very suitable for working.

Performance - Arrow Lake-H with single-channel RAM
The Arrow Lake H processor is combined with 16 GB RAM (single channel) in the test device. However, the capacity can easily be expanded with the second slot, which would also help the GPU performance.
Test conditions
We tested the ExpertBook B5 in performance mode, whereby you can easily switch between the modes using the Fn+F key combination. In battery mode, the standard mode is the maximum available.
Processor - Core Ultra 5 225H
Asus uses the latest Intel processor Core Ultra 5 225H (Arrow Lake-H), which offers a total of 14 cores/threads (4x Performance, 10x Efficiency). In the ExpertBook, it can consume a maximum of 45 watts and 40 watts permanently, which is why the CPU performance is very good overall. The competitors are clearly beaten, especially in the multi-core tests. In battery mode, the multi-core performance is only around 9% lower.

GPU performance - Arc Graphics 130T
The graphics output is provided by the integrated Arc Graphics 130T which cannot exploit its full potential due to the single-channel RAM. However, the iGPU is perfectly adequate for everyday office use, but if you want to play some games after work, you should install a second RAM module. The graphics performance remains stable in battery mode and under constant load.

Temperature
There are basically no problems with the surface temperatures. The casing remains very cool during simple tasks and there are no problems on the top of the base unit even under maximum load. On the underside, we measured just under 48 °C at certain points, which can be uncomfortable when in contact with the skin. In the stress test with combined CPU/GPU load, the processor can briefly consume 65 watts and then stabilizes at 40 watts.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.7 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 47.8 °C / 118 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.2 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 34.4 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 28.6 °C / 83.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-1 °C / -1.8 F).

Speaker
The two stereo speakers do a good job for an office laptop. The volume is sufficient and you benefit from the clear reproduction of the treble, especially for voices.

Energy consumption
With a maximum idle consumption of 10.1 watts, the ExpertBook B5 is not one of the most economical models. Under full load, we briefly measured just under 70 watts, so the power supply is the limiting factor here. However, this value quickly stabilizes at ~63 watts, so the included 65-watt power supply has hardly any reserves.

Battery life
Asus installs a 50 Wh battery and together with the relatively high consumption values, the battery runtimes are not particularly good compared to the competition. At a brightness of 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 73% of the maximum brightness in the test device) and 60 Hz, our WLAN test ran for just under 9 hours and around 6.5 hours at full brightness.
