A God of War spinoff is said to be in the works and signs point towards a Greece setting. It is expected to be a side story and not a remaster, and a new leak suggests it will be a 2.5D/metroidvania game. The information comes following the State of Play announcement so it is possible that the spinoff is showcased at the event on June 4.
The God of War franchise took a new direction with the 2018 release of the Norse era God of War. It introduced a third person perspective rather than a more top-down view with major upgrades to the graphics and environments. It was followed up by God of War Ragnarok that built on top of the solid foundation. Now, it looks like Santa Monica Studio is working on a spinoff that will be more on the lines of a side scroller, platformer, and explore a side story, rather than take the main story forward.
This metroidvania God of War game is said to have Greece as the setting and feature 2.5D elements. Tom Henderson, the owner of Insider Gaming, was asked about the rumored God of War game on his post about the State of Play announcement on Xcancel. Henderson responded with, “Hearing a lot of scuttlebutt about the 2.5D/metroidvania game or whatever it will be, yeah. Seems to be much smaller in scale than what I initially thought.”
Journalist Jeff Grubb also chimed in with a “Yeah,” but did not give any details. This interaction somewhat points towards a metroidvania God of War game but do take this piece of information with a pinch of salt. Sony or Santa Monica Studio have not shared any information. However, with tomorrow’s (June 4) State of Play event, things might become clearer.
Speculations about the God of War side story talk about the spinoff bridging the Norse mythology titles to a new gameplay arc set in Egypt. Sony also reportedly cast Middle Eastern actors for a AAA title, further encouraging this theory.
