On LinkedIn, A Microsoft employee mentions that Xbox Game Pass has more than 35 million subscribers. The company hasn't publicly updated the number since early 2024, but evidence is mounting that growth is slowing. With Series X|S sales declining, a new Xbox handheld could boost membership counts.

Microsoft last shared Xbox Game Pass subscription data in February 2024. The service, which is an alternative to purchasing individual games, accumulated 34 million subscribers. Now, Timur222 has stumbled upon a LinkedIn profile for a Microsoft employee with a different number. In his profile, the Program Manager claims that Game Pass has over 35 million members. Although the total appears impressive, it suggests that Microsoft may not meet its own goals for growth.

There are several reasons why gamers should wait for Microsoft to provide an official update. It's unknown when Kevin K. last revised the information in his LinkedIn profile. Additionally, the figure of 35 million+ is inexact, and the actual number may be higher. Still, critics argue that it's further evidence that Xbox Game Pass subscription growth has plateaued. As the service gained customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft was more eager to share progress reports.

Reports previously circulated that Microsoft aimed for 100 million Game Pass subscribers by 2030. By early 2024, it was clear that the company may struggle to reach that benchmark. Expansion has slowed considerably, particularly on the Xbox Series X|S. Even Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently conceded that the service doesn't appeal to every gamer. Some customers only play a few titles a year and lack the time for new Xbox Game Pass games each month.

With declining console sales, Microsoft aims to attract new candidates for Game Pass on other devices. PC Game Pass has a healthier outlook than the console-specific services. Also, during the June 8th Xbox Games Showcase, it unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally series. The new Xbox handheld consoles run on Windows, with Microsoft focusing on optimizing the OS for gaming. To find new Xbox Game Pass subscribers, the company will have to rely on the untapped potential of the mobile market.
